Mabel arrived in spring, along with a small flock of ex-battery hens who narrowly escaped slaughter. When she first moved in, she could barely stand. The other chooks quickly learned to walk, peck for insects and luxuriate in dustbathing.
However, poor Mabel showed little interest in running around and her legs seemed very unsteady. We gave her some homegrown physical therapy, picking her up and putting her on her feet, time and time again. Soon she got the idea, and within three days she had learned to walk. Now she is a confident member of the flock.
