August has been another very busy month at the Black Sheep! Despite the cold snap a couple of weeks ago, it feels as if spring is finally on its way. We are hand feeding a number of young animals, keeping us busy around the clock. While we have a non-breeding policy, we are very fortunate to be looking after Bo the lamb, two young goat kids and two baby bunnies whom we have taken in from a variety of rescue situations and to whom we have been able to offer a home. Our non-breeding policy is because we do not wish to bring further animals into captivity, and also because there are so many animals out there desperate for homes, and we want to create as much space for needy animals as possible. Therefore we make sure that none of our resident animals have babies.
Mork and Mindy are two tiny bunnies whose home was dug up by a digger in Otaki. Fortunately they were saved before any of the resident cats or dogs were able to attack them. They were just four or five days old when rescued and despite a slow start they are now thriving! With the sunny weather last week, they ventured onto grass for the first time.
We are also caring for Zip and Merge, two young goat kids, who are great playmates for Bo the lamb. Zip and Merge were rescued from the goat dairy industry earlier this month by the Three Little Pigs sanctuary in Palmerston North. These wonderful folk have rescued and rehomed 17 kids in total. If Zip, Merge, and their friends hadn't been saved, they would have been killed on the day that they were born, on a farm that has over 3000 milking does. Around 80,000 tiny goat kids are killed in New Zealand every year, as they are surplus to the goat dairy industry. So we're very glad that Zip and Merge have found safety, and will stay here as living reminders of the cruelty of the dairy industry.
As always, many thanks for your support! We'd especially like to say a big thank you to VegVUW, who recently organised a bake sale at Victoria University, with the funds from the delicious vegan goodies going to Sirius and the other animals at the Black Sheep. All the best for your work, VegVUW!
