Sponsor one of our permanent residents
By making a small regular payment to the Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary you can individually sponsor one of our permanent residents and directly contribute towards the cost of their food, vet bills and the general care they need in order to live healthy, happy lives. In return you will receive a sponsorship certificate, regular email updates about the sanctuary animals and you can feel proud that you are making an important difference to animal lives. You will also have the opportunity to visit the animals at the Black Sheep during our summer working bees, during which you will be offered a tour of the sanctuary and a vegan morning tea. The cost of sponsorship varies from animal to animal, starting from as little as $10 per month. As the sponsorship payment generally does not cover the full cost of animal care, some animals may be supported by more than one sponsor. Please read the profiles of our residents below and choose who you would like to support. Once you have decided, click the button below to fill out a sponsor form. |
Marshmallow
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Marshmallow was rescued at just two days of age. A group of hikers found the orphaned wild goat kid huddled next to her mother's dead body. Thankfully they got in touch with us and brought her to the sanctuary straight away. We bottle fed Marshmallow around the clock and eventually she grew into an energetic, affectionate, cheeky goat! Bunnykin
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Bunnykin came from a home where the children had lost interest in him. Once a sad casualty of the pet industry, he now lives at the sanctuary, hopping through the grass in our predator-free paddock or sitting contentedly with his companion, a grey rabbit named Maggie. Chester
Individual sponsorship: $40 per month Chester is a rescued miniature horse who arrived at the Black Sheep in early 2016. He suffers from laminitis, but with careful attention to his diet and exercise he is well and happy, enjoying life with his friends Lilly and Thunder. |
Marmaduke
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Marmaduke was a pet sheep who had been improperly desexed as a lamb. His hormone levels led to some aggressive behaviour and his humans were going to put him down. Luckily, they got in touch with us at the last minute and we adopted him, arranging to castrate him immediately. He has been living happily with our other sheep ever since, enjoying cuddles and treats from our volunteers! Larry
Individual sponsorship: $40 per month Larry is a friendly and curious pig, loving belly rubs and bananas. He began his life as a house pig. However, when his caregivers had to move , he narrowly escaped slaughter. He arrived at the sanctuary in December 2015 and slowly but surely settled into the sanctuary, getting to know the other pigs. Nui
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Nui lost his home after his caregivers were forced to move. Fortunately, we were looking out for a companion for Peter Rabbit, and the pair live contentedly together at the sanctuary in the safety of our predator-free paddock |
Peter Rabbit Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Peter Rabbit was discovered sheltering in a Wellington building site. Although the workers were feeding and caring for her, this was not an ideal home for a rabbit. Fortunately the tale of Peter Rabbit has a happy ending! We took her in and settled her into our predator-free paddock, where she enjoys fresh herbs, space and the company of Nui, a large black rabbit. Acorn
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Despite his name, Acorn is not tiny! The tall sheep was originally rescued by a long-time supporter of the sanctuary, along with Butternut and Big B. Although very much loved, Acorn and his friends were such strong animals that their caregiver could no longer safely manage their regular health care. The Black Sheep is stepped in to take care of the three sheep. Sunday
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Sunday is one of our most mischievous goats! Her curiosity became apparent from a very young age and she became known as quite the escape artist. Sunday was found as a tiny kid by a couple returning from church in a rural area. They saw that her tethered mother was dead and so they rescued baby Sunday. She is now a mature goat, but still adventurous and full of high spirits. |
Mackay
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Mackay the ram arrived at the sanctuary in the autumn of 2016 with his best friend Ronan the goat. Both had been neglected and abandoned, before being rescued by a kind couple and finding a new life at the Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary. Mackay now enjoys life in the sheep paddock. |

Nooch
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Nooch was rescued after a neighbour's dog dragged him from of some garden bushes. He was a underweight, malnourished and infested with internal parasites. Lots of loving care has returned him to good health and he has bonded with Toffee, another young rescued wild goat. His beautiful hair is the colour of 'Nooch' savoury yeast, leading to his name. Zelda
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Zelda is a shy and timid turkey who is gradually gaining confidence with humans. Rescued in late 2019, she is enjoying life with her campanion Hilda. |
Spot
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Spot is a lovely mellow white goat who came to us with his friend Archie in August 2019. The pair came from a loving home, but unfortunately their caregiver could no longer look after them. The initial introductions were very successful, and they soon formed new friendships, especially with our youngest goat Merge. Casper
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month In September 2017 Casper the sulphur-crested cockatoo moved into the sanctuary, escaping from a life of confinement. Caspar is very inquisitive and loves sitting up high to keep an eye on everything that's going on around. |
Betty Boo
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Betty Boo arrived with her sister Mary-Ann in the winter of 2015. Betty Boo is quite timid but has gradually become more curious and confident during the time she has been at the sanctuary. She and her sister are very playful, and get up to all kinds of mischief together. Bunnykin
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Bunnykin came to us a few years ago when he was no longer able to stay at his previous home. He joined our other two bunnies that we had at the time, Maggie and Mindy. He quickly became best friends with Maggie and the two of them have been a bonded pair ever sinc |
Iris
Individual sponsorship: $40 per month Iris arrived at the sanctuary as a young heifer. She had been rescued from an organic dairy farm. If she has stayed, she would have gone into the dairy industry, constantly pregnant and her babies taken away from her. We're so glad she is with us at the sanctuary. Here she is with her friend Hazel, who has since been rehomed to a safe loving home with other cows. Iris enjoys life with Sirius and Struan. |
Sammy
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Sammy was found in 2011 - she was curled up beside a river, washed away from her flock. She was the size of a cat, a tiny black wet sad creature. A kind family going for a walk rescued and hand-raised her. She quickly recovered. and was full of life mischief. When she became too much of a handful a few weeks later she came to the Black Sheep where she impressed us with her love of climbing and interacting with everyone |
