Mushroom
Individual sponsorship: $10 per month Mushroom is a tall fluffy grey rooster. After being abandoned, he was rescued by a kind women who unfortunately couldn't keep him, so he came to the Black Sheep and he has lived here since. A gentle and special soul, he used to spend most of his time in the sheep paddock with the ewes, but he has recently started making friends with the other roosters and spending more time in the rooster paddock. |
Walnut
Individual sponsorship: $10 per month Walnut arrived after a neighbour contacted us, concerned that he was about to be killed because roosters are not allowed in residential areas. He came straight to us! Walnut is huge, as tall as your knee, and he loves his meals - being that large you need lots of food. He is the leader of the roosters in the bottom orchard, and is very social with his rooster friends. |
Rachel
Individual sponsorship: $10 per month Rachel is an abandoned hen, who was rescued along with her chicks by a kind supporter, and brought to the Black Sheep. Rachel is really sweet and all her chicks are very friendly. They all follow you round hoping treats. Rachel has been teaching them how to roost in the trees. Some are better than others. She is a devoted mum and is getting along with all the other roosters too. |
Spot
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Spot is a lovely mellow white goat who came to us with his friend Archie in August 2019. The pair came from a loving home, but unfortunately their caregiver could no longer look after them. The initial introductions were very successful, and they soon formed new friendships, especially with our youngest goat Merge. |
Iris
Individual sponsorship: $40 per month Iris arrived at the sanctuary as a young heifer. She had been rescued from an organic dairy farm. If she has stayed, she would have gone into the dairy industry, constantly pregnant and her babies taken away from her. We're so glad she is with us at the sanctuary. Here she is with her friend Hazel, who has since been rehomed to a safe loving home with other cows. Iris enjoys lfe with Sirius and Struan. |
Sprite
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Lovely Sprite is a shy but adventurous free spirit who enjoys playing with the other goats, climbing and exploring. She especially enjoys testing out the goat playground. |
Myfanwy
Individual sponsorship: $10 per month Myfanwy's and Deadpool's former caregivers were moving to Australia, and could no longer look after them. They have now settled into the sanctuary and are making friends with the other ducks. |
Archie
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Archie is a friendly black and white goat who came to us with his friend Spot in August 2019. The pair came from a loving home, but unfortunately their caregiver could no longer look after them. The initial introductions were very successful, and they soon formed new friendships, especially with our youngest goat Merge. |
Comfrey
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Comfrey and his friend Ginko are two lovely white Saneen goats, who were found as strays in the Porirua area. The Waikanae branch of the SPCA originally rescued them, but when they were unable to be rehomed, they found safety at the Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary and quickly settled in to the herd. |
Fanny
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Fanny was rescued after been abandoned by her previous owners, and left at their property when they moved out. She had spent the last seven years tethered with a tyre around her neck, and no contact with other goats. She is now happily integrated into our herd and is enjoying learning to be a goat again. |
Jacob
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Jacob was rescued along with nine other lambs, due for slaughter. Jacob follows Bartholomew (his best friend) around everywhere and is a very shy sheep though deep down he secretly loves cuddles. He has a distinctive mop of hair and rocks the teddy bear look. |
Fang
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Little Fang was rescued from a farm where she had been separated from her mother and survived only on grass, with the result that she is much smaller than she should be. She was due to be slaughtered for dog food as she wasn't growing. Luckily a lovely women rescued her and brought her to us. With good food and veterinary care, she is now healthy and happy, though quite shy. She will never grow to full size. |
Brian
Individual sponsorship: $30 per month Brian is an adorable Captain Cook pig. Some very kind people found her in the wild as a small piglet. She was near death, but they brought her home and managed to save her with lots of loving care. She has settled in well at the sanctuary. Although initially quite shy (as she was originally wild), years later she now enjoys a tummy rub! Here is Brian with her small friend Toa. |
Soybean
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Soybean is a lovely but shy sheep who was pregnant when she was rescued and arrived at the Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary. She gave birth to a lovely lamb, Sorrel, who is now a large healthy adult sheep. We're so happy that they will never be separated. |
Freckles Individual sponsorship: $20 per month On the road up to the sanctuary two of our volunteers found a tiny little baby bunny, barely bigger than a freckle. She has had a rough start to life - she had a head tilt caused by a parasite called E.Cuniculi and could not walk (or rather hop) straight. She also lost a leg after an injury related to the illness. However she has made a good recovery, and loves hopping around and digging in the freedom of our predator-free paddock. |
Betty Boo
Individual sponsorship: $20 per month Betty Boo arrived at the Black Sheep in the winter of 2015 along with her sister Mary Anne. Betty Boo is quite timid but has gradually become more curious and confident during the time she has been at the sanctuary. |
Doris
Individual sponsorship: $40 per month Horace and Dorris, two charming and mischievous rescued piglets, arrived in 2011, after beingrescued from a factory farm. Sadly Horace has now passed away, but Dorris enjoys life with her pig friends at the sanctuary. She love enjoys mud baths in summer to keep her delicate skin cool and protect her from sunburn. |
Spud
Individual sponsorship: $10 per month Spud came into the world by accident after his mother hid a clutch of eggs, Sadly as Spud grew older, his father didn't like the competition, and kept beating him up. So he came to the Black Sheep. Spud is very sweet and is always with his rooster friend Cashew. He on occasion likes being petted but apart from that he is independent and spends his day around the house and napping with Cashew and the ducks. |
