Summer has meant an influx of animals needing care and loving homes! We now have nearly 40 roosters and are at capacity. Several new goats have arrived. Wild animals and birds have also needed care - the most recent being a hedgehog which we found in the middle of the road walking the centre line... She was fly-blown and shaking, poor baby. After 24 hours of care she seems to be well on the way to recovery!

We finally now have a black-faced sheep, Ethel, who is settling well into the sanctuary along with her friend Hector, a white ram!

The latest issue of the Sanctuary Sunbeam is now out - click here to download a copy and check out what we've been doing!

Or, if you would prefer a print copy, drop into Opportunity for Animals Newtown or Kilbirnie to  pick a copy up. Alternatively, if you would like a copy posted to you, become a Friend of the Sanctuary, and we'll post a colour copy to your letter box!

Ivy, a lovely new goat is just settling in at the Black Sheep! Until a few days ago, she lived tied up at a holiday park, with people teasing her and prodding her. Not surprisingly, her owners reported that she was becoming aggressive, and they wanted to find another home for her. We managed to get in touch with them, and soon she was at the sanctuary to begin a new life of loving care. We've nearly finished the goat fence around the top paddock, so very soon she will be free to run and play all day, while still close to the house for company!

Four young heifers recently arrived at the sanctuary - Poppy, Lily, Hazel and Iris. They are very affectionate and love trying to lick you! They have also befriended Thunder the miniature horse and the animals are all hanging out in the paddock together - they're the same size and even the same colour as Thunder!  We're so glad that the calves have escaped the fate of a dairy cow - a life of being artificially inseminated every year, and the calf taken away at a few days of age ... Here our lovely girls are with Thunder and also Archie and Clarence, the ex-broiler chooks!
